Description

1980 Moscow Summer Olympics Silver Medal for Boxing. The United States boycotted these Moscow Games in protest of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, a gesture reciprocated by the USSR for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. This unfortunate American absence has left our nation's collecting hobby with a particular dearth of 1980 medals, so this offering will come as a welcome surprise to our wide bidding audience in that sports subgenre. The medal was obtained by our consignor from a contact in the Dominican Republic who acquired it from a Cuban fighter--either Adolfo Horta or Hipolito Ramos, who took second place honors in Featherweight and Light Flyweight respectively. The Cyrilic word for "Boxing" is engraved on the medal's edge, which has been freed of its clasp and ribbon for display purposes. Otherwise the medal presents in as-issued condition, with no condition distractions to note.
