1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics Torch. Some of the most important material that the sports collectibles division of Heritage Auctions has presented to the hobby derived from the international summit of athletes held in Lake Placid, New York in February 1980. Those Games are best remembered for an event widely considered the greatest in the history of American sports, when a young American hockey team authored a stunning underdog victory over a seemingly unbeatable Soviet squad in a contest forever after known as "The Miracle on Ice."Remarkably, we have presented more Gold Medals from that victorious team than torches that lit the path to glory, a compelling illustration of just how rare the latter is. Only 140 torches were constructed for the Lake Placid Games, one of the smallest production runs of any Olympics. Here is one of those 140.
The design was meant to recall the torch held aloft by the Statue of Liberty, a simple yet elegant look with bronze coloration and concluding in a spiral-wrapped leather handle. A small silver-colored band at mid-handle supplies the Olympic seal and text. Total length is twenty-eight inches. Light wear to the handle, and expected oxidation to the flame source, otherwise fine.
