    Description

Consigned by head athletic trainer with his letter of provenance!

1976 Pelé Game Worn New York Cosmos Jersey. The included notarized letter from former Cosmos head athletic trainer Joel Rosenstein succinctly tells the tale:

"Pelé joined the NY Cosmos in mid-season 1975. His first full season with the Cosmos was 1976. The first NASL league game of Pelé's first full NASL season was against the Miami Toros. The game was played April 18, 1976 at Tamiami Park, Florida. The NY Cosmos won the game 1-0 on a David Clements goal. I was the Head Athletic Trainer for the NY Cosmos that year. This is the jersey worn by Pelé in his first NASL game of his first full NASL season. He gave it to me at the end of the game, and it was autographed by Pelé prior to the Cosmos reunion game July 21, 1991."

Game photography from that Opening Day contest confirms the tale, establishing this as one of the most definitively documented Pelé jerseys ever to reach the hobby's auction block. While the legendary footballer's greatest glories came in his native Brazil, which he represented in the World Cup four times, and where he anchored the celebrated Santos FC for nearly two decades, his emergence in the North American Soccer League was a marketing coup that continues to pay dividends four decades later. As such, Cosmos jerseys from Pelé are highly coveted by collectors of all nationalities for their elite relevance to the international fortunes of "the beautiful game."

The white mesh garment features screened-on identifiers, with the immortal number "10" applied to the chest beside the team logo, and again on reverse beneath the most famous name in the sport's history. It is here we find the black sharpie autograph from the jersey's former owner. Interior collar is tagged "Champion Medium," correct for the legend's rather small but powerful frame. Please note that a Franz Beckenbauer jersey from the same source appears within the Final Session of this auction. Letter of provenance from New York Cosmos head athletic trainer. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
