1973 Olga Korbut Leotard Worn in USSR Gymnastics Display in London.The first reaction at seeing this garment is how impossibly small it is, just twenty-three inches from top to bottom and nine inches wide at the waist. It's rather difficult to believe that so much talent, and so much influence, could fit inside. She must have looked even tinier in the vast expanse of Wembley Stadium in London, at 90,000 seats surely the largest venue Korbut had ever commanded. We've been unable to locate data regarding the attendance at the 1973 USSR Gymnastics exhibition held there, but it's certain that every attendee had come there for a single reason: to see "The Darling of Munich" in person.
There is only a single leotard in Korbut's collection and this is it, a sky-blue spandex garment interrupted only by white trim at the collar and a white zipper at front. It is a perfect match to all Wembley footage where Korbut, looking years younger than her tender age of eighteen, showcased her world-beating technique and million-watt smile for an adoring British audience.
When considering athletes who appear with the pantheon of their respective sports, we are unable to identify any other figure for whom the entirety of available game worn garments in the collecting hobby is represented by a single example.
