Description

1970 Pele Cleats Worn in Training for World Cup. His was the most important and storied career in the history of the sport of soccer (or "football," if you live in any country other than the United States), but the event widely considered to be the legendary Brazilian's utter masterpiece was his play in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. After his nation's four to one victory over Italy in the World Cup Final, Italian defender Tarcisio Burgnich, who had been assigned the unenviable task of marking the world's top striker, addressed the press. "I told myself before the game, he's made of skin and bones just like everyone else--but I was wrong."

Presented here is a pair of cleats worn by Pele as he joined the Brazilian team in the city of Guanajuato for high-altitude training in order to prepare for the thinner air of Mexico City. The "Adidas Tornado" shoes exhibit magnificent wear, with each signed twice on the sole by their former owner. Extensive provenance is delivered from the minister of tourism for Guanajuato, to whom Pele gifted the shoes personally. A pair of snapshots of the two gentlemen together are here, as is a photocopy of a 1970 newspaper noting the Brazilian team's stay in the town. A photocopy of the tourism minister's employment credentials and a personal letter of provenance from this man round out the package. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication (autographs).
