Description
Population two, none superior!
1964 The Beatles USA Debut Concert Full Ticket with Original
Washington Coliseum Envelope, PSA NM-MT 8. The opening salvo of
the British Invasion of these former colonies came quite fittingly
in our nation's capital, just two miles east of the White House at
the Washington Coliseum. Just two days after their legendary
appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, the Fab Four arrived by rail at
Union Station to meet a horde of screaming fans, a snowstorm having
grounded flights. The concert venue, a former boxing arena, featured a stage set up in the round, requiring the band to rotate their positions to face different sections of the audience. The Beatles took the stage at 8:31 p.m., delivering a twelve-song set that included "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "She Loves You," and "Twist and Shout." The performance was marked by the deafening screams of 8,092 fans, making it difficult for the band to hear themselves play. One of the 362 police officers on hand to keep the peace plugged his ears with bullets to stave off the deafening shrieks of the youthful masses.
The band's manager Brian Epstein allowed CBS to film The Beatles' performance, which was shown by the National General Corporation in a telecast in US cinemas in March 1964. The performance has since been released on DVD, and extracts were included in "The Beatles Anthology." But if footage from The Beatles' American debut concert is readily available, tickets most assuredly are not. Just seven full tickets appear in the PSA population, with this virtually perfect example sharing the top ranking with just one other example at PSA NM-MT 8.
The key to its survival is here as well, the original ticket envelope in which it spent lonely decades of solitude prior to its recent discovery. It is likewise in spectacular undamaged condition.
