Description

1960 Rome Summer Olympics Gold First-Place Medal. The most famous Gold issued during these Games was a Light Heavyweight Boxing model supplied to Cassius Clay, a.k.a. Muhammad Ali, but the offered model belonged to a top finisher in the Fencing competition, as indicated by the Italian word for the sport--"Scherma"--engraved on the separate but present mount. The original olive leaf chain is present as well, though in several pieces.

The medal itself is crafted from gilt silver and features a design by Giuseppe Cassioli with Victory seated above stadium and legend on obverse and winner carried by jubilant athletes on verso. Diameter 68 mm., weight 102 g. Light surface wear.
