1956 Summer Olympics Torch, Melbourne. Just 400 torches were produced for this first Olympic Games in Australia and most have been lost or remain on that remote continent. In fact, this is the first to appear within a major sports auction in over a decade, so serious collectors should see this offering for the rare opportunity it is. The design is identical to that of the 1948 London torches but for the bold text reporting, "1956 Olympia Melbourne XVI Olympiad" at the base of the flame cup. It measures sixteen inches (16"/40.64 cm) in length, with the diameter of the flame cup measuring five and a half inches (5.5"). General handling and storage wear is evident, but our catalog imagery should convey that the aesthetics remain bold and impressive.
