Historic hoof-wear from the Triple Crown winner!

1941 Whirlaway Horseshoe Worn in Kentucky Derby & Preakness Victories.
He's number twenty-six in The Blood-Horse magazine's ranking of the top 100 American thoroughbred champions of the twentieth century, and the fifth steed to claim victory in all three editions of the sport's most celebrated series. By both genetics and association, Whirlaway was one of the most decorated American horses of the pre-war era, sired by Blenheim, who likewise supplied world-beating genetics to 1947 Kentucky Derby winner Jet Pilot. And, in the saddle for all three legs of the 1941 Triple Crown was Eddie Arcaro, the only jockey ever to Triple twice, sweeping the Derby, Preakness and Belmont again in 1948, upon Citation.

Thus it is no hyperbolic statement to characterize this lucky horseshoe as one of the most significant horseracing articles ever to tempt an auction bidding audience, an appropriately named "Victory" brand model repurposed after its term of service into a sterling silver trophy by Lucille and Warren Wright, the owners of the Calumet Farm in Lexington, Kentucky where Whirlaway was raised.

Provenance is ironclad, bolstered by a signed letter tracing the ownership from the Wright family to the nephew of a close friend of theirs. The piece is also pictured and identified in the June 2007 edition of "Collectors News" magazine, on page thirty-one. Finally, the lot supplies a vintage mounted photograph of Whirlaway and his dam Dustwhirl (7.5x5.5" including mount). Letter of provenance from nephew of Wright family friend.
