1938 Kentucky Derby Poster Featuring 1937 Winner "War Admiral." He would fall to Sea Biscuit this year in "The Match Race of the Century," but War Admiral was unquestionably the most famous horse on Earth when he appeared upon this ultra-rare broadside produced for the 1938 Derby, just a year after he claimed all three editions of the sport's fabled Triple Crown. This gorgeous full-color advertising sign was likely removed from a display within the Louisville city limits, quite possibly from the walls of Churchill Downs itself.Printed on heavy card stock, the thrilling treasure from the sport of kings exhibits paper loss at the corners where it had been taped to a wall, but otherwise the physical defects are remarkably minor, with the occasional wrinkle or patch of age-toning having only minor effects upon the world-class aesthetics. Dimensions are 22x14". Verso is blank and exhibits tape stains.
A lengthy search of all online auction result databases reveals no other examples of this piece, suggesting the thrilling possibility that this is the sole survivor. A phenomenal relic from one of the most exciting years in the history of American thoroughbred racing.
