Description

1936 Spyridon "Spyros" Louis Signed Postcard--Winner of First Modern Olympic Marathon. It was the brainchild of Frenchman Michel Breal, who was inspired by the legend of messenger Phidippides, who had run from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce the Athenian victory in the Battle of Marathon. In this first edition of the modern Olympics, the nation of Greece was intent upon claiming this victory for themselves as a point of national pride. Louis became the most famous man in Greece with his victory, offered by the King any gift he could dream to ask. His request: a donkey-drawn carriage for his water-carrying business.

Presented is an exceedingly rare example of his Louis' autograph, signed at the Olympic Village of the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. A beautiful postcard with an aerial shot of the Olympic stadium and surrounding venues, bearing a Third Reich postage stamp and Olympic postmark, is signed in pencil and by Louis with an "1896" notation. The autograph is 8/10. Please note: PSA/DNA has ruled "inconclusive" on this lot due to lack of exemplars. Please bid accordingly.
