1931 Ellsworth Vines is Stricken at the Meadow Club Original Photograph. "A large gallery, which plied fans industriously to manufacturer cooling breezes, saw Lott win from the Pacific coast sensation," reads an article in the August 8, 1931 edition of The Spokesman-Review. "Ellsworth Vines Jr., Pasadena, who was forced through illness to default after four sets had left the two players dead-locked. A stomach ailment, which recently has developed into a near-chronic condition, forced Vines to quit." We see the tennis legend clearly in distress in this image as fans crane their necks for a view. The original image measures 8x10" in size (inclusive of the wide white borders) and exhibits no faults of note. The Ellsworth Vines Collection
The greatest figure of Depression-era tennis, the lanky but heavy-hitting Vines was assigned the title of "greatest tennis player ever" by none other than the legendary Bill Tilden, who makes the assertion in a signed photograph offered as part of the remarkable collection to follow. In four separate tennis seasons of the 1930's, Vines was ranked number one, either alone or jointly, and the tangible evidence of that dominance appears in these pages. The collection comes to us from Vines' son, Ellsworth Vines III, and makes its hobby debut in this auction. Each lot will be accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from the son of this superior athlete.
