    Description

1927 Helen Wills Wimbledon Ladies' Doubles Championship Gold Medal. The second of three Ladies' Doubles Championships for Wills at Wimbledon, who paired up with Elizabeth Montague Ryan for this edition and her final victory in the event in 1930. Ryan's tally of nineteen titles in Ladies' and Mixed Doubles at Wimbledon stands as a record to this day. Wills' prize features a classical victory figure in front of a tennis net at obverse and text on verso announcing, "The Lawn Tennis Championship, 1927, Ladies' Doubles Champions, Miss Helen Wills, Miss E.M. Ryan." Medal measures one and a half inches in diameter and is housed in its original velvet lined case from "Fattorini & Sons Jewellers" of England. Top of the case is embossed in gold, "The Lawn Tennis Championships 1927." Fine condition.

    The Helen Wills Collection

Charlie Chaplin once proclaimed the most beautiful sight he'd ever seen as, "the movement of Helen Wills playing tennis." Though Wills tennis resume is all but unequaled in the history of the sport, with thirty-one Grand Slam titles including nineteen for Women's Singles at the U.S. Championships, Wimbledon and the French Open, she maintained an uneasy relationship with her fame. Single-minded in her pursuit of excellence, Wills earned the nicknames of "Little Miss Poker Face" and "Queen Helen" for her stoic demeanor, which many read as haughtiness. But Wills would explain, "I had one thought and that was to put the ball across the net. I was simply myself, too deeply concentrated on the game for any extraneous thought." Clearly few have ever done that better. The collection that follows serves as unimpeachable evidence of the fact, and all lots make their auction debut here, saved by our consignor from the trash heap upon Wills' passing in 1998.

I received the catalog and was very impressed with its color illustrations, descriptions and attractive layout. (It has better production values than the New York houses.)
