1920's Duke Kahanamoku Race Worn Swimsuit with Family Letter. Today he is best known as "The Father of Surfing," but in his time the native-born Hawaiian gained international renown as the first superstar of the sport of swimming, with three Gold and two Silver medals earned at the 1912, 1920 and 1924 Olympic Games. The presented swimsuit was issued by Moana Bath House on the shores of Waikiki, just yards from where the famous statue of Duke stands today. The one-piece suit is constructed much like overalls and fashioned from heavy wool, making the modern viewer thankful for advancements in social norms and swimsuit technology. A faded white stenciled "Moana" appears on the chest, and interior collar is tagged "Moana Hotel Baths, Honolulu, Suits Made by Guntner & Mattern Co., San Francisco, Calif." A notarized letter of provenance is supplied, signed by Samuel A. Kahanamoku. It explains that the suit was found in a chest at the home of Duke's mother, and that she recounted that Duke had worn it in a competition at Honolulu Harbor. A second signed duplicate of the letter is included, though this copy is not notarized.
