1904 St. Louis Summer Olympics Participation Medal. Unquestionably the most elusive Olympic participation medal ever issued, this important award appears on want lists of even the most advanced Olympic collectors. The 1904 Games were held in conjunction with the 1904 World's Fair/Exposition in St Louis. Fair organizers who had been granted rights to host these Games presented them like a side show to the exposition. Limited funding was appropriated by apathetic Fair executives to promote and stage the '04 Olympics, thus attracting only a small number of competing athletes (most were from the U.S.). By the completion of the St Louis Games, budget restrictions and limited participation equated to the smallest number of participation medals ever produced for any Olympiad.

But the failings of the event have only served to elevate the offered artifact to the highest reaches of the Olympic collecting subgenre. Rarity, of course, is the primary driver that dictates value in the collectibles market, but this gorgeous octagon supplies far more than low census numbers to tempt the hobbyist. Yet another masterpiece from the period's top award maker "Dieges & Clust," best remembered today for World Series press pins and Championship awards of the early twentieth century, this 1.5" diameter struck copper relic features a wreathed victory figure on obverse and a legend in eleven lines on verso, with shields of St. Louis, France and the U.S. on a background of ivy leaves. Weight 40 g.

Condition is wonderful, with a deep and clear strike and only a couple pin pricks of the oxidation common to period awards. A truly superior representation of one of the hobby's greatest rarities.Additional details and provenance for the Harmer Johnson Olympic Collection.
