Description

1900 Paris Summer Olympics Gold Medal for Firefighting with Original Presentation Box. Exquisitely crafted keepsake was presented to a victor in these second modern Olympic Games, held in conjunction with the French capital's famous International Exposition of 1900. These Games were particularly noteworthy as the first ever held outside of Greece, and the first to feature female competitors.

This important medal provides magnificent design elements retaining crisp detail as struck over a century ago. Presented to the first place winners of the Team Fire Fighting event, the medal reads "Concours De Sapeurs-Pompiers" (English translation "fire brigade competition") on the reverse. As it should, the edge of the gold-plated medal includes the "hand" symbol of the Paris Mint along with the word "argent" (silver), indicating its underlying composition . We are unsure if this medal was awarded for the "Volunteer" or "Professional" Team Fire Fighting event.

Fire fighting was an unofficial event at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. Competitions were held for both professional and volunteer firefighters. While the fire fighting event is no longer considered by the International Olympic Committee as an Olympic event, the American report of the 1900 Games, prepared by A. G. Spalding, devotes an entire page to the competition, which was won by Kansas City of the USA and "its famous engine and hook and ladder company No.1."' Size is 1.6x2.3". Weight is fifty-five grams (55 g.). "Argent" is stamped at bottom edge. Drilled hole to allow the medal to hang from a ribbon is a modification made after presentation, and a period ribbon is included. The medal and ribbon were separated but have been professionally reattached with modern circular fasteners. Original cardboard presentation box is a rarity.
