1896 Athens Summer Olympics Participation Medal. The first edition of the Modern Games was properly headquartered in the city where the Olympics were born millennia earlier, the ancient city of Athens, Greece. Here we encounter a gilt bronze participation medal presented to an athlete engaged in the historic event. Design by Nikephoros Lytras features seated Nike holding laurel wreath, phoenix rising out of flames, Acropolis in background. Verso holds five-line Greek legend in laurel wreath. Diameter 50 mm., weight 58 grams. EX condition.
