Extremely Rare Chicago Stadium Construction Photos (3 Photos). Before there was the "House that Jordan Built" there was the grand Chicago Stadium. Its inspiration was the 15,000 seat Olympia stadium in Detroit. The cost of construction was $9.5 million or $136,000,000 in 2017 dollars with a capacity for over 18,000 fans for basketball and hockey (if you count standing room only) and the largest recorded crowd was 20,069. When Chicago stadium opened on March 28, 1929 it was the largest indoor arena in the world and one that offered air-conditioning. It was home to the Chicago Blackhawks and the Bulls until it closed in 1994. The first NFL playoff game was held there in 1932 plus multiple Democratic and Republican National Conventions, plus boxing matches (like Graziano vs. Zale in 1947), musical concerts, rodeos and more. Offered are three extremely rare construction photos of the stadium of Paddy Harmon's dreams. Each is a finely detailed image of approx. 10x8" in size, mounted to thick card stock with paper/adhesive along the perimeter. Copy within the photos date them to November 30, 1928, December 21, 1928 and January 31, 1929. These offer a very rare glimpse of the building that held witness to Chicago and sports history.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
