1981 Björn Borg Original Painting by LeRoy Neiman. Between 1974 and 1981, the Swedish superstar became the first man in the Open Era to win eleven Grand Slam titles--six at the French Open and five consecutive victories at Wimbledon, but the blazing heat of the spotlight would prove too much for the private Borg to endure--and he'd retire at the age of twenty-six in 1982. This classic Neiman oil on board finds Borg near the end of his brief and brilliant reign, unmistakable with his flowing blonde hair secured beneath his signature striped white headband.

This painting appears in the 1983 hardcover compilation of Neiman's greatest works, aptly entitled "Winners: My Thirty Years in Sports," on page sixty-seven. It's a phenomenal example of the expressionist style that was Neiman's trademark, and which made him perhaps the most emulated American artist of the twentieth century. His work has recently enjoyed an explosion in both critical acclaim and auction sale prices, with Heritage having sold no fewer than thirteen Neiman originals for six-figure prices in the past five years.

The work is signed "LeRoy Neiman '81" at lower right, and the outfit Borg wears in the oil on board masterpiece appears to match that which he wore to defeat against John McEnroe in the US Open Finals that year, also likely as Neiman was a New York City native and thus a likely spectator at the local event. Dimensions are 29.25x35.25", framed to a final size of 35.5x41". Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from SGC Authentic.
