1930 Inaugural World Cup Monochromatic Lithographs Lot of 2. These two rare Art Deco monochromatic lithographs (each 11x20.5") date from the inaugural World Cup in Uruguay, when the host country defeated Argentina in the final. Designed by artist Guillermo Laborde, they show "... the stylized figure of a goalkeeper, in the supreme effort of trapping a football that is about enter next to the angle formed by the cross-timber and a post...An enormous '1' enlaces the historical fact of being the First World Football Championship."

They were posted at the Estadio Centenario and around the city of Montevideo to promote the tournament. The first, which is stamped "Contabilizado," was probably done so to designate it as a file copy, which it explains its extraordinary condition considering its age and that fact that most of the other known examples of this poster tend to exhibit heavy wear as they were placed all over Montevideo. It remains completely intact, with two very tiny pinholes at the top corners, and grades EX-MT to NRMT. The second is stamped with the more common "Comite Ejuctivo, 1er Campeonato Mundial de Football, Contaduria 1930" stamp in green but exhibits very heavy wear, creases, tears, and some paper loss. If restored properly and framed it would still make a nice display piece. A rare look at the genesis of a global phenomenon.
