1930-31 Ellsworth Vines Pacific Southwest Championship Trophies Lot of 3. Trio of gorgeously crafted silver award trophies was earned by young Vines at the apex of his historic career. The two smaller cups, each approximately thirteen and a half inches tall, are identical but for the year of issue, engraved, "Pacific Southwest Tennis Championships, Los Angeles [year], Mens Singles Won By." Vines apparently never went to the trouble to have his name engraved. The larger bowl, measuring seven and a half inches in height with a diameter of twelve inches, recognizes both years' victories with engraved text that announces, "To Our World Champion, Ellsworth Vines, Winner, Pacific Southwest Tennis Championships, 1930 1931, In Appreciation from the Southern California Tennis Association." Smaller trophies are stamped on base with maker's marks and "Sterling, 11 3/4 oz. weighted," while large bowl states "Sterling on Copper, Made in England." Each piece exhibits only tarnishing on a list of condition caveats, with no dents or other more permanent issues to note.

    The Ellsworth Vines Collection

The greatest figure of Depression-era tennis, the lanky but heavy-hitting Vines was assigned the title of "greatest tennis player ever" by none other than the legendary Bill Tilden, who makes the assertion in a signed photograph offered as part of the remarkable collection to follow. In four separate tennis seasons of the 1930's, Vines was ranked number one, either alone or jointly, and the tangible evidence of that dominance appears in these pages. The collection comes to us from Vines' son, Ellsworth Vines III, and makes its hobby debut in this auction. Each lot will be accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from the son of this superior athlete.
