Early 1960s Bob Baun Game Worn Jersey. Though he turned in more than 13 seasons of service with the Toronto Maple Leafs defense, Bob Baun is best-remembered for his performance in a single game. The setting was the 1964 Stanley Cup finals and the Leafs were matched up against the Detroit Red Wings. Baun took a Gordie Howe slapshot to the ankle during Game 6, forcing him to leave the contest. He returned in overtime to score the game-winning goal and his Maple Leafs went on to win game 7 as well to secure their third consecutive Stanley Cup. It was not revealed until after the series that the ankle was indeed broken.

Baun's blue home wool sweater from the early 1960s is presented here, standing as a marvelous exemplar of this very popular Maple Leafs style. This fine blue wool was manufactured by Doug Laurie Sports in Toronto and has tagging to that effect on the inner right seam. Jersey includes the celebrated lace-up collar with two eyelets, a style introduced in 1958. A beautiful 35-point Maple Leaf logo chest insignia is applied in white felt, as are the rear numerals. The "21" found on the verso has been sewn on with wavy stitching with the numbers measuring 9" tall.

Outstanding evidence of wear is seen throughout. A few unrepaired holes are found on both the front and reverse of the jersey body, with some team repairs found on the front in the area below the chest logo. Sleeves also have extensive wear with too many team repairs to count. Inside of the garment also displays good use.

Part of all of the Toronto Stanley Cup champs of the 1960s, Baun wore this iconic wool sweater for a team that simply dominated the NHL. The absence of sleeve numbers make this jersey most likely from before the 1962-63 season, making it a possible Cup Finals jersey from the Maple Leafs' defeat of the Chicago Black Hawks in 1962. A very desirable Maple Leafs design not often seen at auction. LOA from Rich Ellis. Guide Value or Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000.
