Description
The greatest moment in Dallas hockey history!
1998-99 Brett Hull Stanley Cup-Winning Goal Game Worn Dallas
Stars Jersey--Photo Matched with Hull Letter. Say his name in
Buffalo and get ready to run. It always hurts to lose the
championship, but to lose it like that? And to Dallas, no less, a
town that has never seen a crust of ice form on any body of water
larger than a puddle? For Sabres fans, Brett Hull's Stanley
Cup-winning goal was the Red Sox equivalent of the grounder through
Bill Buckner's legs, but even worse because it wasn't fate that had
failed them, but justice itself. Those cries of refereeing malpractice didn't end at the borders of Sabres fandom, however, and the questionable legality of the goal has more or less become Brett Hull's primary legacy in the sport, considerably more so than as the man who sealed the deal on the Stars' only Stanley Cup Championship. Most hockey experts consider it the most controversial goal in the history of the professional game.
Check out the footage at our online listing and decide for yourself. There's no doubt that Hull's skate is inside the crease--nobody denies that. The issue at hand is whether or not that position was legal under the rules, which state that you cannot receive the puck at that position, but you can enter the crease if you had possession prior to entry. So was possession maintained throughout the deflection off Hall of Fame goalie Dominik Hasek, or should the goal have been negated and the second-longest Finals game in NHL history have continued onward?
Twenty years later, the issue is still hotly debated, making the singularly significant jersey on offer one of the most compelling conversation pieces we've had the privilege to present. It comes to us with Brett Hull's own signed letter of provenance and multiple photo matches from footage captured at Marine Midland Arena on June 19, 1999.
The various wounds to the fabric of the green and black mesh jersey suffered over the course of a long and fruitful season provide the data points allowing for Resolution Photomatching's definitive assertion of authenticity. Hull's letter mentions some as well, perhaps most notably a diagonal slash just above the tail of the second digit in the rear number "22." There are probably more than a dozen features clear enough to link up, a healthy congregation of puck marks, stick marks, a foot-long team repair at right rear shoulder. Fans of evident game wear will not be disappointed.
The team crest is applied to the center of the chest of the historic garment, with the 1999 Stanley Cup patch sewn to upper right chest. Team logo patches atop each shoulder give way to twin number "22"s at each sleeve. Those digits are repeated at verso beneath a 3.75" tall block-lettered surname. Interior collar bears "CCM, Goalie Style" labeling. A size "56" flap tag has been sewn over by nameplate stitching, the fight strap at the rear interior tail has been cut off at the base, and a velcro patch is sewn inside the rear tail.
The jersey is gorgeously showcased in a Dallas Stars jersey shadowbox with a signed photo of the famous goal. Note that the winning bidder will have the option to have the jersey and photo removed and shipped without the case if he or she wishes to reduce shipping costs. Letter of provenance from Brett Hull. LOA from Resolution Photomatching. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
