Gretzky letter of provenance & multiple photo matches!

1994 Wayne Gretzky All-Star Game Weekend Worn & Signed Western Conference Jersey.
Ordinarily, you'd have to be dead, or at least dying, to get that kind of treatment. But Wayne Gretzky was still a young man in perfect health when he was bestowed with an honor not offered since Roberto Clemente, and Lou Gehrig before him, sent straight to the Hall of Fame upon retirement without the requisite five year waiting period. And while number four and number twenty-one were retired from the Yankees and Pirates wardrobes respectively to honor the fallen ballplayers, Wayne Gretzky's famous double-nines were declared off-limits for the entirety of the National Hockey League in perpetuity, a distinction previously afforded only to the great Jackie Robinson in the entirety of the four major professional sports.

So while ownership of a number "99" jersey within the modern NHL is an impossibility, the odds increase only minimally for those battling within the modern sports collectibles market. The man whose career scoring total establishes him as the greatest offensive weapon in the history of the sport has played a mean defense when it comes to his game used gear, creating the widest chasm between supply and demand of any star athlete of the past three decades. Michael Jordan, Brett Favre, Derek Jeter-he's got them all beat. For most jersey collectors, Gretzky will remain nothing more than a dream.

But that tough luck will change for one victorious bidder on this Platinum Night, as Heritage presents a truly special gamer with provenance as ironclad as any in the hobby. It was worn by The Great One as captain of the Western Conference All-Star team at New York's Madison Square Garden during a season that saw him claim his tenth and final Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer.

The Western Conference crest adorns the royal purple star on the chest of this special garment, with the captain's "C" applied at upper left chest and the fabled double-nines appearing at each bicep and verso, where "Gretzky" spans the shoulders. Interior collar holds "CCM [size] 56" and "Center Ice Authentic Collection" labels, while interior tail reveals Gretzky's important velcro swatch customization and cropped fight strap. Appropriate wear is evident.

A black sharpie signature on rear numerals provides the most compelling of the photo matches, as Gretzky actually wore the jersey after the signing, presumably during the "skills" portion of the All-Star Weekend rather than in the game itself. The absence of a helmet lends credence to this attribution. The MeiGray letter of authenticity asserts a match to Getty Images photo #85660878, a posed studio shot of the handsome icon. Finally, Gretzky himself signs a letter of provenance with his rare Wayne D. Gretzky signature, a format only seen on official documents. He supplied this letter when the jersey was sold to raise funds for the "Big Brothers of Kitchener-Waterloo" charity in June 1994.

The jersey is accompanied by a large framed display (39x27") containing an unsigned 8x10" photo of Gretzky wearing this jersey, a larger signed photo of Gretzky playing in the All-Star Game, and an array of tickets, cards and official program.
