1992-93 Wayne Gretzky Game Worn & Signed Los Angeles Kings Jersey with Two Team Letters, MEARS A10. While ownership of a number "99" jersey within the modern NHL is an impossibility, the odds increase only minimally for those battling within the modern sports collectibles marketplace. The man whose career scoring total establishes him as the greatest offensive weapon in the history of the sport has played a mean defense when it comes to his game used gear, creating the widest chasm between supply and demand of any star athlete of the past three decades. Michael Jordan, Brett Favre, Derek Jeter--he's got them all beat. For most jersey collectors, Gretzky will remain nothing more than a dream.

But that tough luck will change for one victorious bidder, as Heritage presents a stellar Los Angeles Kings gamer backed by the most ironclad provenance imaginable. Two letters of provenance from Los Angeles Kings front office staffers tell the tale of a transaction involving Gretzky jerseys and season tickets in exchange for high-end gym equipment for the team's training facility. One of those Kings staffers held onto one of two jerseys issued to him for the trade, and that jersey is presented here.

It derives from a particularly noteworthy season, the only one in which the Great One was able to guide the Kings to the Stanley Cup Finals, the high-water mark of Gretzky's service to the team. Rather coincidentally, the jersey presents an eye-catching patch at upper left chest that marks the centennial of Lord Stanley's fabled prize, balancing the design with a captain's "C" at upper right.

The team logo crest is affixed to the jersey front, while number "99" appears in bold tackle twill at sleeves and again on verso, beneath a block lettered "Gretzky." Interior tail holds "Los Angeles Kings 92-93 Set 2" embroidered swatch, and fight strap has been cut off, as per Gretzky's well-established preference. "Maska/CCM [size] 54" tag appears at interior collar. The experts at MEARS characterize game wear as "moderate," proper for a player who battled injuries en route to his brave playoff run. Chest is autographed in bold black sharpie.

A letter (photocopy, as original was paired with another Gretzky jersey sourced at the same time) from Kings trainer Pete Demers attributes the game wear to "February 1992," though this is clearly a typo as he correctly notes in his text that the jersey derives from the 1992-93 season, so surely he meant February 1993. With two team letters, a perfect autograph and a perfect MEARS rating, this is a gamer that distinguishes itself even within the tiny supply of available Gretzky representations. LOA from MEARS, A10. Letter of provenance from Los Angeles Kings sales & marketing director. Letter of provenance from Los Angeles Kings trainer (copy). LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
