    Description

Gretzky family provenance and multiple photo matches!

1991-92 Wayne Gretzky Game Worn Los Angeles Kings Jersey. Ordinarily, you'd have to be dead, or at least dying, to get that kind of treatment. But Wayne Gretzky was still a young man in perfect health when he was bestowed with an honor not offered since Roberto Clemente, and Lou Gehrig before him, sent straight to the Hall of Fame upon retirement without the requisite five year waiting period. And while number four and number twenty-one were retired from the Yankees and Pirates wardrobes respectively to honor the fallen ballplayers, Wayne Gretzky's famous double-nines were declared off-limits for the entirety of the National Hockey League in perpetuity, a distinction previously afforded only to the great Jackie Robinson in the entirety of the four major professional sports.

So while ownership of a number "99" jersey within the modern NHL is an impossibility, the odds increase only minimally for those battling within the modern sports collectibles market. The man whose career scoring total establishes him as the greatest offensive weapon in the history of the sport has played a mean defense when it comes to his game used gear, creating the widest chasm between supply and demand of any star athlete of the past three decades. Michael Jordan, Brett Favre, Derek Jeter-he's got them all beat. For most jersey collectors, Gretzky will remain nothing more than a dream.

But that tough luck will change for one victorious bidder on this Platinum Night, as Heritage presents a stellar Los Angeles Kings gamer backed by the most ironclad provenance imaginable. Thoroughly photo-matched to images printed within a pair of period publications, the jersey made its transition from active duty to collectible when it was gifted to Gretzky's uncle as the pair took in a Toronto Argonauts home semi-final shortly after the hockey legend acquired partial ownership of the Canadian Football League franchise. The date was November 17, 1991, just twenty-four hours after the Kings hosted the Detroit Red Wings at The Great Western Forum. The elder Gretzky reported that the shirt was still damp with sweat when Wayne presented it to him.

We direct interested bidders to our online listing, where small defects in the "Los Angeles Kings" crest on the jersey chest perfectly match game photography, and another where a missed stitch on a flipped up hem drives the point even further home. Patches celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the NHL and Gretzky's captaincy adorn the upper chest, with number "99" applied to each sleeve, the left including a secondary Anniversary patch commemorating twenty-five years of Kings franchise history. Three and a half inch block trumpets "Gretzky" across the rear nameplate. Interior hem holds a pair of Gretzky customizations-a Velcro swatch at right, and an embroidered patch with the name of his son "TY" at left. The latter is likewise visible in the second photo match.

The jersey exhibits solid game wear, with black marks, board paint transfer, board burns on the sleeves, piling at the cuffs, and a small unrepaired hole on verso. Blue residue from Wayne's elbow pads is evident on the inside of the sleeve cuffs, as Wayne had colored over the Cooper logos in blue marker due to contract endorsement issues. Both sleeves have also been custom shortened. LOA from MeiGray Group #145973. Photo matches, as noted. Letter of provenance from uncle of Wayne Gretzky.
