1987-88 Wayne Gretzky Game Worn, Signed Edmonton Oilers Helmet. The story that accompanied this impeccable Wayne Gretzky Edmonton Oilers game-worn helmet is almost as amazing as the piece itself. Leading up to the final game of the 1987-88 Stanley Cup Finals, Gretzky had quietly expressed his wish to the media that if his Oilers were to win the Stanley Cup at home he would love to remain on the ice to celebrate the moment with the Edmonton faithful. The problem was that during past celebrations at Northlands Coliseum fans tended to climb the boards to rush the ice, making any post-game celebration on the ice extremely unsafe. Luckily for our consignor, who was a member of the "Druids Rugby Club," the Oilers asked the club members to help with on-ice security after the final playoff game. Only three raucous fans made it on to the ice, and as a result Gretzky got his wish and led his team in an extremely memorable celebration.

When the dust finally settled, the Druid security guards were positioned near the Oilers locker room, and to their amazement Gretzky invited them in for the post-game party. As our consignor chatted with the "Great One," Gretzky asked a member of the training staff for one of his game helmets, and as a token of his gratitude, he presented our consignor with this amazing "JOFA" Oilers helmet.

One of only a handful of authentic Gretzky Oilers game-worn helmets ever offered at auction, this piece shows nice use, while it features 2" "99" decals at the rear, with the team's logo stickers are on each side. Possibly worn during the Stanley Cup Finals, the proper padding remains to the interior, and it has been signed in bold black sharpie on the top. In addition, the helmet is accompanied with a photograph of our consignor working security on the ice after the historic final game of the 1987-88 Stanley Cup Finals. Originating from Gretzky's final game in Edmonton, the provenance on this game-used shell could be no better. Notarized letter from consignor. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph). Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (autograph).
