1981-82 Herb Brooks "The Sporting News" NHL Coach of the Year Presentation Plaque. Herb Brooks was able to work miracles as a coach. One of his reclamation projects was with the New York Rangers. A year before Brooks surfaced, the team wallowed in mediocrity as it finished 30-36. Enter Brooks, who steered the team into the postseason in year one. The Sporting News recognized him with this 9x13" plaque which notes: "The Sporting News 1981-82 National Hockey League Coach of the Year Herb Brooks New York Rangers."
