Description
1971-72 Bobby Orr Game Worn Boston Bruins Jersey--Stanley Cup Championship Season, Photo Matched! Despite the violent nature of its game play, the sport of hockey has seen incredible durability from many of its greatest stars. Gordie Howe, Mark Messier, Ray Bourque, Johnny Bucyk, Steve Yzerman and Wayne Gretzky all dedicated two decades or more to the professional game. But Bobby Orr followed the path of Sandy Koufax, a soaring meteor that burned white-hot but was gone too soon. He played just ten NHL seasons, eight as the greatest talent ever to wear the black and gold of the Boston Bruins. Those competing dynamics of elite significance and limited service have created a massive gulf between demand and supply for Orr gamers, and here we present a majestic example thereof, worn during the iconic Hall of Famer's second and final ascent to the sport's highest peak. Just two years after his glorious "Superman" skate-off goal to capture Lord Stanley's fabled hardware, Orr did it again, his first-period goal against the New York Rangers in Game Six of the Finals proving to be the Cup clincher in the 3-0 result.
It's somewhere between possible and probable, due to the strong game wear this jersey exhibits, that Orr wore the offered garment in the Boston Garden half of the six-game Finals, and that somewhere a photograph exists that could establish this definitively. We have not yet located such a photo, but this lot does include a pair of photo matching documents from GameWornAuctions.Net and Resolution Photomatching respectively, each image undated.
The latter focuses on stitching imperfections near the left shoulder, and if we look more closely we can also see what appears to be the same red board paint transfers to the left. A closer examination of the jersey finds other strong signs of wear including stick marks, board burns, inner pilling and a pair of team repairs in the Bruins famous circular application. The larger of the two appears at the point of the v-neck, a great Orr trait as he wore this jersey style without the lacing and thus was uniquely susceptible to this kind of tearing. Some general staining throughout is likely related to imperfect storage over the passage of decades.
The classic spoked "B" crest appears on the chest, with Orr's immortal number "4" at each shoulder and verso. Interior collar holds proper "Wilson" label, and if you look super-close, you can just barely make out a handwritten "52" size designator. These handwritten sizes were typical for the Bruins era in question. The shorn fight strap at interior is consistent with Orr's personal jersey customization.
Mirroring the season of his first Stanley Cup Championship in 1969-70, Orr ran the table on personal hardware this season, claiming the Hart Memorial (NHL MVP), Norris Memorial (Top Defenseman) and Conn Smythe (MVP of Stanley Cup Playoffs) Trophies. When considering the fine game wear, the multiple photo matches, and the elite achievement of this particular NHL campaign, this is unquestionably one of the most significant and desirable hockey jerseys of the post-war era.
