One of several Bruins jerseys consigned to this auction by Boston Garden worker!

1970-71 Bobby Orr Game Worn Boston Bruins Jersey--Photo Matched! Despite the violent nature of its game play, the sport of hockey has seen incredible durability from many of its greatest stars. Gordie Howe, Mark Messier, Ray Bourque, Johnny Bucyk, Steve Yzerman and Wayne Gretzky all dedicated two decades or more to the professional game. But Bobby Orr followed the path of Sandy Koufax, a soaring meteor that burned white-hot but was gone too soon. He played just ten NHL seasons, eight as the greatest talent ever to wear the black and gold of the Boston Bruins.

Those competing dynamics of elite significance and limited service have created a massive gulf between demand and supply for Orr gamers, and here we present a majestic example thereof, worn as defending NHL champion the season after Orr's "Superman" goal ended three decades of Stanley Cup drought in Beantown.

Though the Bruins would not successfully defend Lord Stanley's fabled trophy the season this jersey saw action, Orr himself posted a campaign for the ages, earning his second of three consecutive Hart Memorial Trophies as the NHL's Most Valuable Player, and his fourth of eight consecutive James Norris Trophies as top defenseman. Though teammate and fellow future Hall of Famer Phil Esposito would take the scoring title, Orr's 102 assists led the league. Both that figure, and his 139 points for 1970-71, stand as his career highs.

The garment bears witness to the brutal march toward those personal bests, the letter of authenticity from GameWornAuctions noting "stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, stitch pops, inner pilling and in excess of two-dozen team-sewn repairs." The letter likewise references the photo matches supplied with the lot.

The battle-scarred beauty features a laced neck and classic Bruins crest at center chest. Number "4" is applied to each sleeve and verso in black-on-yellow fabric. "Wilson" label remains affixed at interior tail, with original fight strap nearby. LOA from GameWornAuctions. Photo matches. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
