The Rocket soars in the first ever NHL All-Star Game!

1947 Maurice Richard NHL Inaugural All-Star Game Worn Jersey. Like the first Major League Baseball All-Star Game of 1933, the inaugural edition of the National Hockey League's premier exhibition was born of a blend of spectator interest and altruism, each directing proceeds from ticket sales to enrich a fund for the benefit of struggling ex-players. Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens served as the venue, with the Stanley Cup Champions acting as the home team and an array of NHL luminaries from the rest of the league representing the visiting side.

Chief among those All-Stars was Maurice "Rocket" Richard, the legendary Montreal Canadiens right winger who entered the game as the reigning Hart Trophy winner, the NHL's most valuable player. The first man to score fifty goals in a season would pull the All-Stars even with the Leafs at three with an unassisted strike early in the third period, and then assist Doug Bentley for the game-winner in the four to three final.

This gorgeous star-spangled and striped red wool sweater was worn by Richard in that auspicious debut, providing many of the thrills that inspired the decision to make the All-Star Game an annual tradition. Even without the elite significance of the garment's original owner and the event in which it saw action, this is a relic that should draw a flood of bids based upon aesthetics alone. It's a perfect match to the included (modern) print of the team photo.

A classic red on white chenille "NHL" crest takes center stage on the jersey chest beneath a sky of five white felt stars. Blue and white stripes run from wrist to wrist across the back shoulders, where five more white stars sail above Richard's immortal number "9" in blue and white. A "McNiece's" manufacturer's label appears at interior collar. Minimal staining and a scattering of small holes alternately attributable to game wear and mothing cause little visual distraction, as our catalog imagery should validate. It's a truly extraordinary artifact that ranks with the most significant game worn hockey jerseys that Heritage has had the honor of offering. LOA from Joe Tomon. LOA from Heritage Sports.
