The greatest moment of the sport's greatest scorer
2005-06 Alexander Ovechkin Game Worn Washington Capitals Rookie
Jersey from "The Goal"--Photo Matched to Later Game.Call it fate, or the divine intervention of the hockey gods, that brought the two greatest stars of their respective generations together for one of the most glorious goals ever recorded on professional ice. As the Washington Capitals visited Wayne Gretzky's Phoenix Coyotes on January 16, 2006, a rookie sensation named Alexander Ovechkin had already secured his reputation as one of the greatest offensive wizards of the National Hockey League. He'd finish that debut campaign with fifty-two goals and fifty-four assists for 106 points, more than double the tally of any rookie since.
But that Calder Memorial Trophy season is best remembered for a single, spectacular assault on the Coyotes net that left even The Great One shaking his head in disbelief. As the twenty-year-old Russian was dragged to his back on the ice by Phoenix defender Paul Mara, Ovechkin managed to locate the puck skidding above his head and blindly hooked it toward the goal, past the extended stick of goaltender Brian Boucher and into sports immortality. Mention the words, "The Goal" to any Ovechkin fan, and he'll know exactly what you're talking about.
Presented is the jersey the ascendant legend was wearing as he netted a goal nearly as famous--if not as historically significant--as Bobby Orr's "Superman" masterpiece. We have confirmed with the staff at MeiGray that Ovechkin wore only a single Set 2 white jersey for the 2005-06 season between January 10 and March 4, and this is it.
The screaming eagle logo emblem glimmers on the chest, with "Ovechkin 8" applied in tri-tone tackle twill to verso. A team logo patch and number "8" appear at each shoulder. Interior collar holds "Made in Canada [size] 58" label, while the proprietary labeling of the Capitals and MeiGray appear at interior rear tail. Fight strap remains in place at lower rear.
An array of stick and board marks speak to the brutality of the sport, and serve to further authenticate the garment through their fidelity to Getty Image 57222730 supplied in the MeiGray letter of authenticity. That photo was snapped on March 4, 2006, the last game in which this jersey was worn. LOA from MeiGray.
