1979-80 Gordie Howe Game Worn Hartford Whalers Jersey. Hockey history collides in this exquisite offering from the end of one era, and the beginning of another. The classic green mesh gamer is among the last ever worn by the thirty-two season veteran of the professional hockey ranks, a career that began with the 1946-47 Detroit Red Wings and concluded with a tally of 801 goals and a position of honor atop the sport's pantheon. His unparalleled skill at finding the back of the net, his strength and toughness and his remarkable status as the only man to serve the NHL in five different decades establishes Mr. Hockey as a key component of any great collection, and this extraordinary relic makes its hobby debut within this Platinum Night auction.

One might become so enamored of the Howe heritage as to forget that the 1979-80 season marked the inaugural season of the Hartford Whalers, adding still further appeal to a jersey with no shortage thereof. The strong game wear evident throughout serves not only to illustrate the toughness of the old man, but to provide ample points of reference for photo matching. The stick mark on the left fin of the whale tail of the logo crest is easy to spot in a number of images of the grey-haired legend in action, as is the custom-cut v-neck collar. "Pucky," the charming, cartoonish whale logo, adorns each shoulder in patch form, with a full "Gordie Howe" spelled in two-tone tackle twill above the fabled number "9" on verso. Double fight strap remains affixed at interior rear tail. Interior collar holds proper "Stall & Dean" manufacturer's label above a washing instructions tag and dual flap tags announcing size (52) and year (9).

It was during this final 1979-80 season that Howe became the first player in history to record his 800th goal, a feat which has since been matched only by the great Wayne Gretzky. LOA from Joe Tomon. Getty Images photo matches include #'s 99891168, 99894079, 99885830, 78941419.
