The future "Miracle" coach competes at the Grenoble Games

1968 Herb Brooks Game Worn USA Olympic Hockey Team Jersey. The Americans dropped four straight to open the 1968 Winter Olympics, dooming the team to a sixth-place finish despite a strong 2-0-1 run to close out the tournament. The Soviets, unbeaten in international competition since 1963, would continue their dominance of the sport, taking the Gold Medal on a podium shared with the second place Czechs and the third place Canadians. These Olympics would be Brooks' second and final Games as a player, but only the beginning of his long quest to bridge the vast gulf between the hockey fortunes of his home nation and that of the seemingly invincible Russians.

Brooks would share 1968 captain duties with United States and International Hockey Hall of Famer Louis Nanne, one of the leading advocates in Brooks' quest to be named coach of the 1980 team. The captain's "C" is applied to upper left chest in patriotic tackle twill, the same format that creates the "USA" on the chest and number "4" on each sleeve and reverse. Original lace appears at collar, and interior real tail holds "Gerry Cosby [size] 46" tagging with a "67" year label.

Very heavy game wear is apparent, with a significant array of board burns, stick marks and even what appears to be scattered blood stains. We suspect that these garments were worn in exhibitions leading up to the Grenoble Games as well, as the physical condition suggests use beyond the Olympic six-game round-robin.

Though it goes without saying that the Olympic legacy of Herb Brooks will always be his leadership of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" team, this jersey from Brooks' captaincy within the Games should be considered a key seminal relic from that long climb to the top. We believe it is the sole game worn garment from the Hall of Fame legend ever made available to the collecting public. Letter of provenance from the Brooks family.
