Description
1965-67 Gary Bergman/Bryan "Bugsy" Watson Game Worn Detroit Red Wings Jersey - Photo Matched to 1965 Topps Card and 1967 Stanley Cup Playoffs! 1960's "Original 6" jerseys are without a doubt high demand relics in short supply. The rarest of the Six are Toronto Maple Leafs jerseys, followed closely by the red Durenes/wools of the Motor City Redwings.Offered is a red home Durene worn initially by rookie defenseman Gary Bergman in 1964-65, and then by Bugsy Watson in 1965-66 & 1966-67, he himself a feisty defenseman who went on to play 17 seasons in the NHL/WHA. This round neck durene garment features an original Redwings crest, horizontally dominant sleeve numbers, and 11 and 3/4" rear numerals in classic Wings mood rounded plain block font. The inner collar sports the Olympic Sporting Goods(Detroit) label, accompanied by a size 46 flap tag and a well worn and tattered custom specs swatch.
The jersey surface displays no less than 26 battle wound repairs, mostly in the shoulder, sleeve and lower tail areas, including a major circular reinforced repair which is visible in a photo of Watson and Bobby Hull sitting in the penalty box after a fight during the 1967 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Another supporting pic of the jersey can be seen in the 1965 Topps set with a young Bergman donning the jersey for his rookie card (card not included in lot). Also of note is repair activity in the NOB area of the upper jersey back, where the frugal Redwings kept the jersey in service into the late 1960s when names were installed on the jersey backs for sporadic National TV Games.
Overall, an outstanding and rare Redwings durene from the middle 1960s, worn by two formidable players of the era. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
