1963-64 Phil Esposito Game Worn Rookie Jersey - With Perfect Photomatch! Hindsight is always 20/20, but if the Chicago Blackhawks had only been able to see the potential that Phil Esposito possessed before they traded him away after his first three and a half seasons in the NHL, the team from the "Windy City" may have been able to avoid what is widely considered one of the most lopsided deals in league history. After being traded to what would become hockey's most explosive team of the 1970's, Esposito was teamed up with the great Bobby Orr in Boston, and this combination helped form one of the greatest offensive duos ever to take the ice.

Here we present the rookie jersey, which Esposito wore during the 1963-64 season on his first NHL squad, the Chicago Black Hawks. For many years, the term "Photomatch" has been thrown around the hobby, even when it doesn't apply. However, this jersey features a perfect Photomatch, which can be confirmed by the hockey card presented in this catalog listing.

The characteristics of this rock-solid Photomatch are as follows: the placement on the left sleeve "Tomahawks" are exact, the bottom of the handles going through "C" perfectly match as the proper "skinny" style and the numeral "7" on the left sleeve is in perfect alignment when compared to the jersey.

In addition, this jersey presents other significant "gamer" characteristics, from the proper chain-linked team logo patch affixed to the front, to the appropriate "Olympic [size] 44" tags in the collar. In 1965-66 the Hawks would go to a "V" neck collar, but this jersey properly presents the earlier circular style tie-down collar, with its original string still present.

Impeccable wear is also displayed throughout, with five team repairs on the right sleeve, eight repairs on the left sleeve, three repairs on the front and three repairs on the back, not to mention the impressive scattering of stick marks that fill this Hall of Fame-caliber canvas. There is an outline of the stitching where a captain's "C" was present on the right breast, from when a St. Catharine's Black Hawks minor league player wore this shirt, which post-dates the time Esposito wore this spectacular garment.

According to "The Spirit of the Game's" Rich Ellis, this is the only Esposito Black Hawks gamer in existence, and in addition to the Bobby Orr rookie sweater also offered in our April Signature Auction, this offering is sure to gain an unprecedented amount of attention from the most discernable hockey collectors across the globe. LOA from Spirit of the Game.
