1962-63 Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion Game Worn Montreal Canadiens Jersey. He earned his famous nickname for a thunderous slap shot, but the moniker seemed appropriate in more ways than one. Despite a playing weight of just 165 pounds, Geoffrion earned a reputation as one of the most physical players of his era, breaking his nose six times and receiving over 400 stitches during a nineteen-season career that would end with his 1972 induction to the Hockey Hall of Fame. His bulging trophy case holds the spoils of six Stanley Cup championships, two Art Ross Trophies as the NHL's leading scorer, and one Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's most valuable player. In October 2005, the Canadiens issued the long-overdue announcement that Geoffrion's number "5" jersey would be retired on March 11th of the following year, but the superstar right winger was diagnosed with aggressive stomach cancer on March 8th and, in a dark twist of irony, perished on the day of the ceremony.

Presented is a magnificent example of that number "5" sweater, worn during Geoffrion's penultimate season in Montreal. The garment exhibits strong, sweaty wear, causing minor dye bleed in the armpits, softening of the tackle twill identifiers, and considerable pilling of the sleeves. Team logo crest on chest exhibits just a hint of separation at the top blue border, and a small tear on the rear numeral is likewise of no aesthetic concern. A team repair patches a wound on right sleeve, matching the style of other period Canadiens jerseys. The number "5" is repeated in smaller format at each shoulder, and an assistant captain's letter "A" is applied to upper left chest.

The experts at MeiGray were able to peg this special relic to a single season due to the unique characteristics of the formation and placement of the numerals and assistant captain letter "A," the two-eyelet collar and the style of the crest. It's just the third Geoffrion jersey from his storied Canadiens service to appear on the hobby's major auction block in the past fifteen years. LOA from MeiGray. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
