    Description

1961-62 Ken Yackel, Sr. Game Worn Minneapolis Millers Jersey & 50th Goal Puck from The Ken Yackel Collection. A member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Ken Yackel had a long and distinguished career as player and coach. As a player, his teams included the USA Olympic Hockey Team, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Boston Bruins, and Minneapolis Millers of the International Hockey League, where he served as the player-coach from 1960-63, winning the Leo Lamoureux Memorial Trophy in 1960-61 as the IHL's leading scorer.

Beautiful blue tie-front durene sports "Millers" diagonally across the chest with "18" at the upper left, and repeated on the verso in a larger format, all sewn-on in red on white tackle twill. Red and white striping adorns the three-quarter sleeves and there is an "A&B Sporting Goods Minneapolis" manufacturer's label in the collar. This exemplar exhibits great wear with ten team executed repairs, stick marks, check marks, and fabric snags.

This lot also includes the actual "Minneapolis Millers" puck which Yackel used to score his fiftieth goal of the season on May 19, 1962 and a great original game action photo (8x10", EX) of him wearing the jersey on offer. Letter of provenance from Ken Yackel, Jr. LOA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: The Ken Yackel Collection

One of Minnesota’s greatest all-around athletes, Ken Yackel, Sr. was a three-sport high school star who went on to enjoy a long and distinguished career as both a player and coach.

As a twenty-year-old defenseman and forward, he was a member of the U.S. National Hockey Team, which captured the silver medal at the 1952 Oslo Winter Olympic Games. As a collegian, he played a key role on two consecutive Minnesota Golden Gophers teams which reached the NCAA Final Four in 1953 and 1954, earning All-Tournament Team and All-American Team honors in the process.

During his tenure with the Boston Bruins in the late 1950’s, Yackel became one of only two Americans to play in the NHL during the decade. In the early 1960’s, as player-coach of the Minneapolis Millers, he led his team to the IHL title and captured the Leo Lamoureux Memorial Trophy as the IHL's leading scorer.

After he hung up his skates as a player, he coached the U.S. National Hockey Team at the 1965 World Hockey Championships in Tampere, Finland and the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the early 1970’s. In 1986, Ken Yackel, Sr. was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.

Displaying the same dogged work ethic and love for the sport as his Hall of Famer father, Ken Yackel, Jr. enjoyed success as both a collegiate and professional hockey player, and later, acclaim as a noted artist. A member of the 1976 Minnesota Golden Gophers NCAA Championship team, Yackel went on to play professionally in several leagues and later coach. His artwork, which specializes in bronze hockey sculptures and oil paintings, is displayed at the Hockey Hall of Fame.

All of the items presented in this collection have been in the Yackel family since they were first issued to father and son, and each will be accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from Ken Yackel, Jr.
