By the time this October 12, 1981 issue of Sports Illustrated went to press, the young Wayne Gretzky had already taken the NHL by storm, winning the league's MVP in each of his first two seasons (he would go on to win MVP honors eight straight times). A young Gretzky is depicted on the cover, poised to break one of hockey's great records when he scored his 50th goal in 39 games that season, smashing the previous mark set by Rocket Richard of 50 in 50 games.
