Description
Very Rare 1925-26 New York Americans With Howie Morenz March 30, 1926 (1st Year NHL) Post-Season Exhibition Game Program. The New York Americans made their National Hockey League (NHL) debut in 1925 with Hall of Famers Billy Burch, Shorty Green and Joe Simpson in their line-up with bootlegger Bill Dwyer at the helm. The Americans came to be thanks to a player's strike by the 1st place 1924-25 Hamilton Tigers who were suspended by the league. With players now in place and a brand new stadium called Madison Square Garden to call home, the "Americans" were born. Success on the ice didn't come easily for the Americans. In their inaugural season, the Americans ranked fifth overall with a 12-20-4 record. Needless to say collectibles from these earliest years of any franchise are highly prized and very rare. Offered is quite possibly a one-of-kind 8-page program from a March 30, 1926 post season exhibition game played in Windsor Ontario with New York battling the Portland Rosebuds. This was not some simple event as both teams padded line-ups with talent for greater fan appeal as was common at the time. For this game, all-time great Howie Morenz (in jersey #4) was called in to play for New York. This was the only known game that Morenz played for the New York Americans. HoFer Hugh Lehman was brought in as goaltender for Portland. Neither great played for these teams in the regular season. Their presence certainly helped ticket sales though. The Professional Western Hockey League (PWHL) did fold the summer of 1926 with Portland being sold to Frederick McLaughlin. They would introduce NHL hockey to Chicago and become the Black Hawks for the '26-27 season. There is center crease, one ink mark, a few edge tears and spine splitting of 2-3" at the top and bottom. Staples are snug and paper quality supple with just some mild toning.Auction Info
