1977-78 New York Islanders Patrick Division Championship Mug from The Mike Bossy Collection. The 1977-78 New York Islanders were an emerging powerhouse in the NHL, continuing their rise as one of the league's top teams under head coach Al Arbour. They finished the regular season with a strong 48-17-15 record, good for 111 points, and first place in the Patrick Division.The team was led by a core of future Hall of Famers, including Mike Bossy, who scored 53 goals in his rookie season and won the Calder Trophy, and Bryan Trottier, who contributed elite playmaking and leadership. Defensemen Denis Potvin and Stefan Persson anchored a stingy blue line, while Billy Smith and Glenn Resch formed a reliable goaltending tandem.
In the playoffs, the Islanders reached the semifinals but were eliminated in a seven-game series by the Toronto Maple Leafs, falling short of the Stanley Cup Final. Despite the disappointment, the 1977-78 season solidified the Islanders as legitimate contenders and set the stage for their eventual dynasty, which began in 1980 with four consecutive championships.
