1976-77 Wayne Merrick Cleveland Barons Game Worn NHL Jersey.

Update: This lot has a letter of authentication from Spivak & Kraut.

The plight of the short-lived Cleveland Barons franchise was one where the team always seemed to be behind the eight ball. Because the NHL approved the sale of the California Golden Seals in August of 1976, there was not enough time for proper promotion of the relocated franchise. Despite getting off to a decent start, the team lost 15 straight games and faded from playoff contention. Team owner George Gund Jr. tried to buy the Richmond Coliseum after the first season, but his efforts proved fruitless. A last place finish in the 1977-78 season spelled inevitable doom, and the franchise folded. Of all the four major North American sports leagues, this was the last time that an organization ceased operations.

Given their short shelf life, finding Cleveland Barons jerseys has proved quite the task. This "Rawlings size 48" durene jersey was worn by Wayne Merrick during the team's abbreviated existence. Merrick was the only player to wear "9" from 1976-78. The front has a thick team emblem which has numerous hit marks and slashes. Both sleeves have Ohio state patches with "9" at the center. Repairs are found on both sleeve ends and there are a few minor runs. The bottom right side sports an unrepaired tear from game action. A Rawlings size tag is sewn in the collar, and fight strap appears inside. The NOB is no longer present but remnants of where it once stood are present. LOA from Spivak & Kraut. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
