Description
1970 Bobby Orr Champagne Bottle, Charm, Piece of Net & Signed Newspaper Photograph of Stanley Cup Game-Winning OT Goal. Twenty seconds into sudden death overtime of the 1970 Stanley Cup Game Four, it was none other than Boston Bruins superstar Bobby Orr who flipped the puck past Blues goalie Glenn Hall in miraculous fashion for the win. What happened next was captured in one of the most famous sports photographs of the century. The image of Orr flying face first through the air, parallel to the ice and about three feet up, exemplifies the passion of that moment. But was it a celebratory leap, or was he tripped by Noel Picard? Both stories circulated, but Orr himself cleared it up in an interview years later: "I jumped, and Noel Picard helped me a little bit, but I jumped, I was excited."Regardless, the image is one of the finest shots in sports, especially considering the circumstances of it being a Stanley Cup winning goal. This auction includes a number of items related to the event, all from the girlfriend of the Bruins Public Relations Director. A full newspaper pullout of the photo from the "Boston Record American - May 12, 1970," signed by Orr twice, once personalized to "Ann (Schreiber)," both in 9+/10 ink. The paper has been laminated onto stiff 15x22" backing material for preservation and presentation purposes.
On the way to the hospitality room celebration after the game, Schreiber and her daughter, Deborah, passed the storage for the nets used in the game. Schreiber pulled out her Girl Scout's knife and cut a 3x10" piece of the original net, and being seen by Anne Bucyk, was asked to cut a piece for her as well. Going into the room, the typical scene of drinking champagne from the Stanley Cup was already in process. After taking a sip, Schreiber's daughter recovered an original (empty) Krug & Co. champagne bottle off the floor, which she had signed by Orr himself.. The net and bottle are included in this lot, as well as a 10K gold Stanley Cup charm (about one inch tall and ten grams in weight) that was given to Schreiber by her boyfriend. Only three such charms were created for the owner, manager and PR Director.
An incredible once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a hockey collector to own pieces associated with one of the most dramatic Stanley Cup victories in history, and all with stellar provenance. Includes original photograph of Ann Lee Schreiber with Bruins Public Relations Director Herb Ralby at Johnny Bucyk's daughter's wedding. Notarized Letter of Provenance from Ann Lee Schreiber. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
