Description
Commissioned by former St. Louis Blues team owner Robert Wolfson
1968 "The Blues and the Bruins" Original Painting by LeRoy Neiman--Featuring Bobby Orr. It was the owner of the St. Louis Blues who commissioned this masterpiece from renowned sports artist LeRoy Neiman, though it is an unequivocally important era of Boston Bruins history that is documented. In Neiman's own hand on verso, he identifies the figures he brings forth in his patented, kinetic style: Blues players Gary Sabourin, Dickie Moore and Glenn Hall and, wearing number "27" for the Boston Bruins, the legendary Bobby Orr.In order to proactively address the rather reasonable protestations that Orr famously wore the number "4," we remind readers that the Hall of Fame defenseman did, in fact, wear number "27" for the briefest period of time, during six preseason contests prior to the start of his rookie campaign. Thus, either intentionally or entirely by happenstance, the dawn of one of the greatest careers in NHL history is captured.
Some viewers, of course, will choose to focus instead upon the mastery of the expressionist form that was Neiman's calling card. All of the hallmarks of his work are found here in full supply, the thick application of oil paint on the wooden board, the blurring of linear structure to convey motion, the daring use of color. It's a work that can only be fully appreciated in person, as the 72x48" dimensions make this one of the larger examples of this celebrated artist's oeuvre. Framed dimensions are 86x62".
Though Neiman has long served as the most recognizable American artist of the post-war era, his recent passing has added rocket fuel to the fire of his market, with four of his works soaring into six-figure territory in recent Heritage auctions. We expect the climb in pricing to continue, and for smart investors to be paying close attention when this classic work hits the block. Third party shipping required.
