    Description

1939-40 Stanley Cup Championship Ring Presented to Clint Smith. When New York forward Bryan Hextall beat Toronto goalie Turk Broda in overtime of game six of the 1940 Stanley Cup Finals, the Rangers became the champions of the NHL. Afterwards, none of the Rangers kissed, drank from or skated with Lord Stanley's cup. There was no parade down Fifth Avenue when the team returned home. It was a different time; a different league.

A short time after, the Rangers famously paid off and then burned their mortgage papers for Madison Square Garden inside the Cup. It was an event which many believe was responsible for the franchise's ensuing fifty-four-year dry spell.

An integral part of the 1939-40 Rangers was a five-foot-eight center named Clint Smith. In 1990, to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the its first Cup, the Rangers re-issued Stanley Cup rings to all living members of the 1940 squad. In 1991, Smith was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. During the 1993-94 NHL season, he presented the Rangers with his 1940 game worn jersey in the hopes that it would inspire them to finally win the Cup and break the fifty-four-year curse. It did.

On offer here is Hall of Famer Clint Smith's 1940 Stanley Cup Championship ring awarded to him by the Rangers in 1990. The top of this exquisite ring features a silver rendition of the Rangers crest atop a blue stone surrounded by "1939-40 Stanley Cup Champions." The sides display "Smith, 10" and "New York Rangers," along with images of the NHL shield and Stanley Cup. The ring measures to a size nine (9) and weighs twenty-nine grams (29 g.) with "Balfour 14K" stamped inside the band.
