Description
Mid-1940s Harry Watson/Bob Davidson Game Worn Jersey. The Toronto Maple Leafs opened a new chapter of their uniform history in 1942 when they introduced the vaunted 35-point Leaf crest that lasted until the late-1960s. Here we present one of those first 35-point shirts, a handsome home blue wool dating from the mid-1940s. Shirt was manufactured by Tease Knitting Co. in Toronto and has tagging to that effect in the tail. Condition is marvelous, with only one small hole on the front and a couple team repairs in the waist striping area. Each sleeve also has a couple tidy team repairs. A 9" tall felt "4" has been sewn to the verso in the customary wavy stitching employed by the team at the time. The upper portion of the numeral has become unstitched and a small unrepaired hole can be found just above it. A fair amount of fading can be observed to the shirt's front when compared to the verso, but that does very little at all to detract from the superb display potential. It appears that this tremendous shirt was worn by at least two celebrated members of Toronto Maple Leaf history. This was most likely the last home jersey that Bob Davidson wore in the NHL as he hung up his skates at the close of the 1945-46 season. The Hall of Famer Harry Watson began his Maple Leaf career in 1946 when he was traded from the Detroit Red Wings. It is believed that this sweater was also Watson's first Maple Leaf gamer. Flip over to the lot of Quaker Oats photos that we also present in this sale and you will see a shot of Watson wearing the same style jersey we present here.
A fine opportunity awaits the lucky collector that secures this fantastic gamer. One of the best-preserved Maple Leaf jerseys that we have seen from the era, it carries with it added mystique with the possibility of being Watson's debut Toronto sweater. LOA from MeiGray. Guide Value or Estimate: $12,000 - $15,000.
