The Great One validates the moniker in Game Seven of Divisional Finals!

1984 Wayne Gretzky Stanley Cup Playoffs Game Used Stick--Photo Matched! He's the most decorated athlete in the full history of American team sports, with a trophy case larger than the average Manhattan apartment. His nine Hart Trophies represent the most MVP Awards earned by any player in any sport, and it would take another hour to list all the rest. But even a player immortalized in sports history as "The Great One" would be the first to insist that hockey is a team sport, and there is no prize that can hold a candle to the Stanley Cup.

Gretzky would hoist that historic hardware four times during his twenty NHL seasons, the first time less than a month after staving off elimination in a winner-takes-all Game Seven against the Calgary Flames on April 22, 1984. The legend's three points--a goal and two assists--would prove to be the decisive margin in the seven-to-four final result.

Presented is the stick that won the only elimination game the Edmonton Oilers faced en route to Gretzky's first taste of hockey's ultimate glory. The "Titan TPM 2020" features "W. Gretzky" stamped on the upper shaft near a handwritten "99," with original black tape at the blade and white tape over the handle and knob. A date stamp of "Mar 19 1984" likewise appears on the shaft, with "WG-1" in pencil near the heel.

Game use is appropriate for a single contest, but one conspicuous heavy scratch in the shaft's primary logo and a dark streak over the lower front side of the shaft just above the heel provide the data points that allows for definitive attribution to this most important game of Gretzky's career to that date. A particularly wonderful image of the original owner brandishing this stick above his head in celebration appears in an included 2008 Edmonton Journal edition ranking hockey's all-time greats, and that publication is included in this lot.
