The Great One claims first scoring title in second NHL season!

1980-81 Wayne Gretzky Game Worn Edmonton Oilers Gloves -- Photo Matched! It's a phrase that dates back to medieval times, to the challenges of one knight to another. But when the young Wayne Gretzky threw down the gauntlet(s) represented in this historic offering, there was nobody able to answer his challenge. The offered gloves date to the first of seven consecutive seasons that The Great One claimed the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer, a reign of dominance all but unequalled in the full spectrum of North American sport.

Though his Edmonton Oilers would not hoist the Cup at season's end, no reasonable person would fail to acknowledge this early brilliance as the engine that would ultimately propel the team to five NHL Championships in the coming decade. There's an enormous amount of magic in these gloves.

There's an enormous amount of wear as well, the exteriors coated with various scrapes and scuffs from sticks, pucks and boards, and the interiors stained with the sweat of exertion. Distinctively fonted number "99" decals appear at each wrist, perfectly matching period photography of these blue and orange "Jofa" brand gamers.

But two stray threads are the key to the photo match, as leading expert Perry Nelson's letter of authenticity explains:

"The gloves have two loose threads, the first can be seen between the first and second knuckle pad on the right glove and the second on the left glove is located on the inner cuff. Both threads have been photo matched to an image of Gretzky playing against the St. Louis Blues on February 18, 1981."

A quick review of the historical record finds that this contest, a nine-to-two Oilers victory at Edmonton's Northlands Coliseum, was Gretzky's first five-goal NHL game, as well as his fifth NHL hat trick and his third NHL natural hat trick. But certainly the extensive wear evident in these gloves suggests that this greatest scoring output of Gretzky's young career to date was just one of many superstar performances in which they played a leading role.
