Other example sold in 2020 for $720k, has since received offer of $1.22 million!
1979 Topps Wayne Gretzky Rookie #18 PSA Gem Mint 10 - Population
Two! The enormity of global press that followed Heritage
Auctions' offering in December 2020 of two of the finest-known
rookie cards of The Great One roused many hundreds of raw cards
from decades of slumber, sending the PSA-graded population of both
the Topps (American) and O-Pee-Chee (Canadian) examples of the
number 18 card soaring. But every last submission aiming at the
dream of a coveted Gem Mint 10 rating was met with disappointment,
as the highest rung of the grading ladder for each population
remains unchanged. There are still just two PSA Gem Mint 10
examples from Topps, and just two PSA Gem Mint 10 examples from
OPC.The OPC specimen we auctioned for $1.29 million has received "Make Offer to Owner" requests as high as $3.4 million in the eighteen months since the original sale, and we brokered a private sale for the other OPC at $3.75 million. The Topps model we auctioned likewise seems like a bargain at its $720,000 price in December 2020 due to an April 2021 offer at $1.22 million.
So we're absolutely thrilled to present this opportunity to own the only other Gem Mint 10 example of Gretzky's Topps rookie card that exists in this August 2022 Platinum auction, and to see what the future holds for this elite rarity. It surely goes without saying that a condition report is unnecessary, as PSA won't grant a Gem Mint 10 rating if there is a single molecule out of place. While it would be impossible to make any definitive guarantees, the fact that the huge volume of raw Gretzky's submitted between our December 2020 auction and today failed to produce a single Gem Mint 10 rating strongly suggests that further access to that top tier will be forever barred to future applicants. This may very well be your last chance at ownership, so bid accordingly.
