1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky Rookie #18 BVG Mint 9. Our December 2020 auction was one of the most globally publicized in the history of the Sports department of Heritage Auctions due to the record-obliterating sale of a PSA Gem Mint 10 example of this card--one of two that exists--for $1.29 million. Literally hundreds of collectors from over a dozen countries reached out to us in the days that followed, desperately hoping that their own examples of a Gretzky rookie measured up to that nearly impossible standard.

Long story short, this ultimate legend of the ice has never been hotter, and we believe there is still plenty of time to invest in the surging modern card market that Gretzky and Michael Jordan are fueling. With that world record PSA Gem Mint 10 example just settling into new ownership, and the other never having surfaced in the collecting marketplace, all eyes must turn to the next step down the grading ladder. We're pleased to present just such an opportunity here.

This visually stunning specimen exhibits a bit of the rough cut for which OPC is famous along the edges, a trait that collectors crave and which is often worn away by collectors hands. This hallmark of our northern neighbor's inferior cutting mechanism is just as much a sign of Canadian heritage as the dual-language text on verso. Image registration is as sharp as Gretzky's skates, as are the four corners. Surfaces are clean and gloss is silky perfection. An absolute beauty of one of the post-war era's most coveted cardboard commemoratives.
